The Anti-Poverty Alliance brings together organisations and individuals across
Newham to tackle the causes and effects of poverty. It feeds into the Mayor’s
Cost of Living Taskforce and develops cross-sector action plans to support
residents with social determinants of health.

Social Welfare Alliance
The Social Welfare Alliance supports frontline workers, champions, and volunteers
with information and referral pathways for residents on income maximisation,
immigration, early years, housing, and more.
Purpose
- Enhance skills of those engaging with residents.
- Facilitate connections with others across the borough facing similar challenges.
- Deliver practical guidance for immediate support and signposting.
Training
- Free online sessions available to all borough workers interacting with residents.
- Covers themes such as Mental Health, Immigration, Employment, Housing, Safeguarding, and Domestic Abuse.
- Delivered by expert tutors providing actionable advice and specialist referral guidance.
Achievements
Since November 2020:
- 6,000+ attendances by frontline workers from 280+ organisations.
- Roles include social prescribers, money/debt advisors, family support workers, champions, and volunteers.
- Regularly updated sessions to meet current resident challenges.
